Q & A Skincare Truths

Skincare Mythbuster Questions and Answers from a Skincare Professional

We've all been plagued by skincare myths as we have aged. I have believed many of them myself. So I took a deep dive into several of them to get the truth.

The higher SPF, the better protection from the sun? TRUTH?

Answer: SPF 30 has shown to block about 97% of all UVB (burning rays) rays, providing an enormous benefit than sunscreens with less coverage, research has determined that beyond 30 SPF the benefits are small. SPR only blocks 98% of UVB. What is important here is that you reapply sunscreen regularly throughout the day and seek shade or wear a visor or hat.

Many women firmly believe if their skin is oily, they don’t need a moisturizer. TRUTH?

Answer:  Even oily skin needs moisture after face washing. Dehydrated skin causes your body to produce more oil to maintain that moisture. Choose an oil-free moisturizer to help reduce shine.

A night cream is unnecessary? TRUTH?

Yes, you do! Why? At night time you need to concentrate on restoring and rejuvenating your skin as you rest. A moisture rich cream before bed time allows the products to work harder while you sleep. Look for one with hyaluronic acid or glycerin to plump and hydrate for the morning.

Cold water will shrink pores? TRUTH?

Splashing cold water onto the face appears to shrink the pores but in reality it does nothing to reduce the actual size.

Sleeping in your makeup occasionally can do no harm. TRUTH?

DO NOT EVER SLEEP IN YOUR MAKEUP.  When you do this, the makeup will mix with oils and dirt that have accumulated on your skin throughout the day. This causes a buildup that’s likely to clog pores and initiate a breakout. If you want a beautiful face in the morning, go to bed with a beautiful night cream.

You will age faster by wearing makeup all the time. TRUTH?

Not true if you properly remove your makeup daily and keep up with a skincare routine.  Makeup by itself will not make you age faster. However, if you are not properly cleansing your skin and following up with essential skincare over a course of time, you will ‌see aging take place.

The harder you scrub and exfoliate, the better. TRUTH?

NO. NO. It doesn’t have to hurt to exfoliate. Physical exfoliators can ‌do more harm than good. The particles can cause damage to the skin. An example of a less abrasive product would be an enzyme exfoliator. This product does not contain actual particles but an enzyme from a fruit or vegetable that will do the work. One of my favorite exfoliators is from Bloom Beaute called Pumpkin Puree Exfoliating Enzyme Facial Cleanser Gel ($17.50)

It gently cleanses the skin and will also provide exfoliating benefits. Loaded with hyaluronic acid and glycerin that adds hydration‌.  IT SMELLS AMAZING TOO!

I hope this points you on the road to obtaining proper skincare. As always if you have any questions or concerns, we would love to hear from you at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
